IQHA 4-H HORSE AWARD
Are you an Indiana 4-Her? Would you like to win a registered Quarter Horse yearling?
Then this award is for you!
What is the 4-H Horse Award? In 1968, the Indiana Quarter Horse Association developed the IQHA 4-H Horse Award. The concept behind the award was to provide recognition to ten deserving 4-H horse/pony members; provide one 4-Her each year the opportunity to own and train a registered Quarter Horse; and to generate additional exposure for IQHA.
Who is eligible? Any 4-Her enrolled in their respective county’s Horse and Pony club that will be in 3rd – 11th grade as of January 1st of the presentation year.
How does a 4-Her apply? Applications are generally available by mid-January on the IQHA website (www.iqha.com) or on Purdue University’s 4-H Horse and Pony website. Also, two applications are mailed along with a cover letter to each county’s Purdue University Cooperative extension office to the Horse and Pony Leader’s attention.
Does the 4-Her actually own the horse? YES! The registration papers are transferred over to the 4-Her’s name upon being awarded the yearling. The total physical, financial responsibility and commitment becomes that of the winner. The only requirement is to use the yearling within the 4-Her’s Horse and Pony project the following year, and to have the horse at the following year’s 4-H Horse Award presentation at the Indiana State Fair.
How are the finalists chosen? Applications received by June 10th of the presentation year are reviewed by a committee that selects ten individual 4-Hers for the interview portion of the Horse Award. Those ten are then interviewed at the Indiana State Fair by a panel of past 4-H Horse Award winners, IQHA representatives, horse industry leaders, etc. From that interview, on 4-Her is selected as the 4-H Horse Award winner. All finalists receive equine-related gifts.
